Will you let God?
Are you letting God?
Is God speaking to you?
Will you listen, learn, obey?
If not, why not?
Let God: Use you, Move you, Shape you, Change you, Inspire you, Touch you, Teach you, Do His Will, Shine His Light, and Draw you Closer Everyday.
Deuteronomy 5:1
Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully to all the laws and regulations I am giving you today. Learn them and be sure to obey them!”
Listen, Learn, and Obey.
That is what Moses told the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land the second time.
Moses was telling them how to grow in the Lord and follow God all of their days. As children of God through Christ we need to Listen, Learn, and Obey. They are the keys to a growing relationship with Christ.
Listen
How do we listen? When do we listen? How do we know God’s voice? Listening is the first step. But if we let distractions and other voices interfere and pull us, we can’t hear the voice of God. If instead we humble ourselves and open our hearts to God we will hear Him.
Isaiah 30:21
You will hear a word spoken behind you, saying, “This is the correct way, walk in it,”
whether you are heading to the right or the left.
Hebrews 3:15
As it says, “Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
God’s Voice
God speaks in many ways and we need to learn to recognize His voice and listen to it. His voice can be quite, loud, or in between. He can speak directly to us or through someone or something else. Through the Bible, His Word, He speaks. He also speaks softly in the quiet stillness. His Holy Spirit within us speaks all the time. We only need to stop, be still and listen. We can miss His voice if we are only listening for Him to speak loudly through something. We should not just listen for the times when He speaks loudly, but also for when He speaks softly. Honestly seek His voice. Sit quietly and listen for God. Actively listen throughout your day. Ask Gods to make His voice clear to you and He will if we sincerely ask and seek Him.
1 Kings 19:11-13
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
John 10:27
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Listen Actively
Set aside time everyday to pray and listen for His guidance. As we go about our day, always be listening for Him. Sometimes He speaks when we least expect it. He always speaks with love and if we listen He will teach us to walk in His ways and guide us in everything we do.
Proverbs 2:1
The Benefits of Wisdom
My child, listen to me and treasure my instructions.
Hebrews 2:1
We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
Luke 8:18
“So be sure to pay attention to what you hear. To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But to those who are not listening, even what they think they have will be taken away from them.”
Learn
Learning is the second step. We must apply what we heard. If we only hear and don’t take action we are not going to grow in Christ and experience His grace and change in our life. As His children we are called to be like Him, to let God make us more like Christ.
Ephesians 4:4-6
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Beginning to Learn
When we listen to God, we will begin to learn and understand the His words. We will realize His goodness towards us and begin to understand His reasons behind His words and instructions to us. We will grow in faith and trust because we will see God is good in all things. We may not always understand God when He speaks, but we can through faith trust Him. We can pray for wisdom and understanding. Through learning we gain knowledge about who God is and His character. Through learning we grow in our relationship with God.
Psalms 34:8
Taste and see that the LORD is good. How blessed is the one who takes shelter in him.
Ephesians 1:17-19
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, will give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him, since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened—so that you can know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength.
God’s Words
We have His Word, the Bible, which is His Word to all of us. Through reading it we can begin to learn and understand Him. Through His Holy Spirit in us we can understand His Word. God will reveal its meaning if we seek and listen to Him. Then we can see and know God more in a deeper way by reading through His Word.
Psalms 119:15-16
I will meditate on your precepts
and focus on your behavior. I find delight in your statutes; I do not forget your instructions.
Psalms 119:148
My eyes anticipate the nighttime hours so that I can meditate on your word.
Humility & Reverence
We need to have humility to learn from God’s words, realizing that we need His guidance. Learn humility by learning to fear God. Fearing God is not being afraid of Him. It means showing Him the highest respect for who He is and all that He has done, realizing you need Him and surrender to Him fully. Without Him we will fail. Only when we are humble we can listen and learn from God. When God speaks learn from it and if you don’t understand pray for the wisdom to understand.
Proverbs 2:2-9
Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight and understanding. Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him.
Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will know how to find the right course of action every time.
Proverbs 1:7
Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 2:10
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy.
Obey
The last and most important part, is we need to obey, put into action, what we have heard and learned from God. He knows best and therefore we need to obey Him. Because of His love for us, He warns us, convicts us, guides us, and teaches us. He desires to keep us safe from sin, which always has consequences, from wrong choices, decisions, paths and anything that will hinder or hurt us in the end. We will go through tough and painful times in life. God allows things, sometimes we may never understand, but God always does what is best for us. Even when we disobey and chose the wrong wayand find ourselves in consequences, God will help us through. He is always there for us. Seek Him and choose His way.
Psalm 119:2
Happy are those who obey his decrees and search for him with all their hearts.
Psalms 1:2-3
Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the LORD’s commands; he meditates on his commands day and night. He is like a tree planted by flowing streams; it yields its fruit at the proper time, and its leaves never fall off. He succeeds in everything he attempts.
Hebrews 11:8
It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.
His Word, Our Guide
The Bible is God’s teachings to all of us to learn His ways and grow in Him. If we read it constantly we will grow closer to God. We will begin to understand and grow in knowledge of who God. It will teach us to obey alongside His Spirit in us revealing its message and meaning to our hearts. God’s Word is alive and will work to transform and renew us.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing even to the point of dividing soul from spirit, and joints from marrow; it is able to judge the desires and thoughts of the heart.
Isaiah 55:11
In the same way, the promise that I make does not return to me, having accomplished nothing. No, it is realized as I desire and is fulfilled as I intend.”
Obedience
If we obey Him we can keep from sin and its consequences. If we grow in God by listening and learning we will grow in love for Him and therefore want to obey Him. Obedience to Christ comes from love for Him. God works in our hearts to give us a desire to obey Him and a love for His ways. Even when we don’t understand we need to Obey. His wisdom is greater than ours. Pray for the faith and strength to obey Him. Out of gratitude and thankfulness we obey.
Luke 11:28
He replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
1 John 2:3-5
And how can we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments. If someone says, “I belong to God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. But those who obey God’s word really do love him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in him.
John 14:15-21
“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you do, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans–I will come to you. In just a little while the world will not see me again, but you will. For I will live again, and you will, too. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them.”
Christ’s Obedience
The greatest example of obedience is Christ. He humbled Himself, taking on human form and serving others. He was God, but He didn’t come to be served, but to serve and offer His life as a ransom for our salvation. He was obedient till death, even death on a cross. He did this to save us from our sin. After all that Christ has done for us how can we not obey? His words, His teaching come out of His love for us. They are not to harm us, but to help us. He loves us So Much and wants the best for us, shouldn’t we love and obey Him? If we obey Him we will find true Joy and Peace.
Philippians 2:5-11
Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross. Because of this, God raised him up to the heights of heaven and gave him a name that is above every other name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Listen, Learn, Obey & Let God
Let God shape you so you become more like Him. Let God teach you how to live in Him. Let God Use your life to build up the Kingdom of God, to reach out to this lost and dying world.
Ephesians 4:15
But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. As each one does its part, the body builds itself up in love.
2 Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the honor both now and on that eternal day.
Are You Growing?
If you are in Christ, but not growing in Him, something is wrong. Are you truly committed to God? God wants people who are wholeheartedly committed to following Him. Honestly and sincerely seek Him in everything. When we place Him first, above everything else in our life and seek Him every day, we will find Him, we will feel Him, we will see Him and be changed. We will grow closer to Him and deeper into the path God has for us in Him.
Psalms 86:11-13
O LORD, teach me how you want me to live. Then I will obey your commands. Make me wholeheartedly committed to you. O Lord, my God, I will give you thanks with my whole heart. I will honor your name continually. For you will extend your great loyal love to me and will deliver my life from the depths of Sheol.
God Knows Us
He loves us so much, that He gave His only son for us, to pardon our sins, so that we could know Him personally. He knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, our deepest desires, our fears and hopes, our heart, and everything in it. If we are truly in Him, we should live for Him because of all He has done for us.
1 Corinthians 8:3
But if someone loves God, he is known by God.
Psalm 139:1-3
For the music director, a psalm of David. O LORD, you examine me and know me. You know when I sit down and when I get up; even from far away you understand my motives. You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; you are aware of everything I do.
Let God
God wants us to grow in Him, not just stay the way we are. He wants to shape, use, teach, inspire, and change you. Listen for God, Learn from Him, and Obey what He has taught you. If we listen, learn, and obey God we will find true Joy, Hope, and Peace.
Philippians 2:12-13
Dearest friends, you were always so careful to follow my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away you must be even more careful to put into action God’s saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.
James 1:22-25
But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves. For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out—he will be blessed in what he does.
